State officials have confirmed the presence of hydrocarbons in the town’s water supply, leaving thousands under a strict 'Do Not Consume' order. But here’s where it gets even more concerning: this contamination is tied to a recent act of vandalism at an Appalachian Power substation near East Lynn, where transformer oil was spilled.
According to a late Thursday night update from the West Virginia Department of Health and the Department of Environmental Protection, initial samples collected on January 16th revealed the presence of hydrocarbons. In response, the town began flushing its water system on January 20th, a process that’s still ongoing. Appalachian Power has also been directed to ramp up containment efforts in Camp Creek and its tributaries to prevent further environmental damage.
And this is the part most people miss: hydrocarbons, often found in oils and fuels, can pose serious health risks if ingested or even absorbed through the skin. That’s why state officials are urging Wayne residents to avoid using their tap water for cooking, cleaning, or bathing until it’s deemed safe. To speed up the process, the federal EPA is stepping in to assist with additional testing.
