The Milwaukee Bucks are in a tailspin, and Giannis Antetokounmpo is pointing fingers – not at opponents, but at his own team! Just recently, they suffered a 20-point drubbing against the Oklahoma City Thunder, a team that was notably short-handed due to injuries. This latest loss marks the fourth in their last five games, and alarmingly, each of their past three losses has been by a margin of at least 18 points. This isn't just a slump; it's a pattern that has Giannis speaking out.
When questioned about the common threads in these lopsided losses, Giannis didn't hold back. He believes the team is fundamentally not playing with the necessary effort or unity. "We're not playing hard," he stated plainly. "We aren't doing the right thing. We're not playing to win. We're not playing together. Our chemistry's not there." He elaborated, describing a situation where players are prioritizing individual scoring opportunities over finding the best shot for the team, leading to a sense of isolation on the court. "Guys are being selfish, trying to look for their own shots instead of looking for the right shot for the team. Guys trying to do it on their own." He also highlighted a tendency to try and erase large deficits in a single play, a strategy he deems ineffective. "At times, I feel like when we're down 10, down 15, down 20, we try to make it up in one play, and it's not going to work."
This dip in performance is particularly concerning given the Bucks' recent history. Their impressive nine consecutive playoff appearances are now hanging in the balance, with the team sitting at 18-25 and struggling to gain momentum, having not won more than two games in a row all season. Adding to their challenges, they will now have to navigate the season without Kevin Porter Jr., a key player who is second on the team in scoring at 16.8 points per game and leads in assists with 7.4 per game. Porter is sidelined with an oblique strain, and his return date remains uncertain, a fact confirmed by Coach Doc Rivers, who stated, "He's not going to play anytime soon, I can tell you that, but we don't know how long he'll be out."
But here's where it gets controversial... Giannis himself feels he's not being utilized enough. In his last four games, including the one against Oklahoma City, he's taken 13 field goal attempts or fewer. He expressed that he's not the type of player to demand the ball aggressively, but he believes his teammates should recognize the impact he can have. "I'm not the guy that will yell and cuss his teammate out and demand the ball," he said. "I've never done that in my career. But I feel like I've played with teammates that kind of understand the gravity that I can cause for our team, in how I can create for teammates and for myself, and how I can help the team be more successful." He's puzzled by the current dynamic, speculating it might be due to the team's youth, their struggles, or players feeling it's their turn to carry the load. "Maybe for some reason, I don't understand -- maybe because we're young, maybe because we're not playing well, maybe because guys think it's their turn, they want to carry the team on their back and try to turn this around -- but I really don't get it. I really don't."
He's even considering a shift in his own approach, inspired by the concept of being a "black swan" – a more aggressive player who demands the ball. "They told me there's this thing that's called the white swan and black swan, that you've got to be the black swan and be more aggressive and demand the ball," Giannis revealed. "It's something I haven't done, that I've never done my whole career. Maybe I've got to do it more."
