A Ugandan political crisis is unfolding, with a prominent opposition leader, Bobi Wine, in hiding and a social media feud escalating. The fate of Uganda's democracy hangs in the balance.
Bobi Wine, a former musician and now a leading figure in Uganda's opposition, has been missing for nearly three weeks. He fled his home on January 16th, fearing for his safety after a police and military raid. Wine's whereabouts are unknown, but he has been actively engaging in a war of words with Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of President Yoweri Museveni and Uganda's military chief.
The recent election, which Wine disputes, saw Museveni extend his decades-long rule. Wine, a 43-year-old with a strong following among Uganda's youth, was the main challenger. Since the election, there have been reports of attacks on Wine's supporters and officials from his party, the National Unity Platform. Hundreds have been arrested, and Wine's wife, Barbara Kyagulanyi, has alleged that she was assaulted during a raid on their home.
Political analyst Timothy Kalyegira suggests that Wine, known for his street-smart tactics, anticipated his potential house arrest and decided to take matters into his own hands. From his hideouts, Wine has been posting on social media, rejecting the election results and taunting the military.
In one of his recent posts, Wine wrote, "I advise the regime to let go of power peacefully and let Uganda's people decide their future. Otherwise, they will face the same fate as despots before them." He further taunted Kainerugaba, calling himself a "rebel without a gun, hiding in plain sight."
Kainerugaba, a provocative social media user, has not taken Wine's statements lightly. He has made threatening posts, declaring Wine a wanted man, "dead or alive," and even threatening to castrate or kill him. Kainerugaba has also denied that soldiers assaulted Wine's wife, and later posted a photo of Barbara being detained during the raid.
The situation took an international turn when Kainerugaba accused the US embassy in Kampala of aiding Wine's hiding. He declared that the armed forces had suspended cooperation with the embassy, claiming Wine "kidnapped himself" with their help. However, Kainerugaba later apologized, saying he had received incorrect information.
The Uganda People's Defence Forces have denied pursuing Wine, with spokesperson Col Chris Magezi stating, "We are not interested in the Bobi Wine drama." Last month, the prime minister and information minister also stated that Wine was not wanted by the state.
Robert Amsterdam, Wine's lawyer, has called for international intervention, stating that Kainerugaba's threats elevate the risk of harm to Wine. He urges the UN and foreign governments to take these threats seriously and demand guarantees for Wine's safety, given his previous experiences of torture at the hands of Ugandan security forces.
